Kevin Powers (Maitland)

Founder/Chief Executive Officer

Beginning his healthcare career with American Hospital Supply, Mr. Powers eventually transitioned from hospital facilities to home healthcare, becoming one of the first District Managers of Caremark.  In 1990 he founded his own home infusion pharmacy, later merging into multiple pharmacy locations, extended service offerings, and a national presence.  Inventor of a patented post-operative sinus drug-device system and investor in several healthcare technology start-ups, Mr. Powers leads the MedShorts team with his entrepreneurial experience of cultivating concepts into realities.

As a Senior Manager with the Intravenous product division of American Hospital Supply during the late 1970’s, Mr. Powers contributed greatly to the company’s success nationally in his role in Corporate training and field sales management.

Recruited by the CEO of Home Healthcare in early 1981 to assume a key role in growing the first business to commercialize home Infusion, Mr. Powers held multiple key positions during his tenure as the company and business model became highly successful and was subsequently sold to Baxter and was renamed Caremark.

Mr. Powers’ knowledge and experience in the growing home Infusion industry which brought significant benefit to the homebound patient, led him to found Comprehensive Care, with the mission of serving the HIV population during the early 1990’s.  The nursing and pharmacy services offered by Comprehensive care were highly regarded among the physician community and the many patients served.

With the advent of new HIV drug products in the late 1990’s which supplanted the need for the more complex drug regimen offered by Home Infusion, Mr. Powers looked for other market segments where the notion of Home IV Antibiotic care could be provided to a specific patient population dealing with a chronic disease.  Mr. Powers understood that the medical specialist focused on specific disease states that were typically treated with standard drug regimens and therapies. He believed that it was likely that the ENT Specialist could increase his/her own success with Sinus disease by actually offering IV antibiotic care themselves.  As a result, Mr. Powers set out to gain perspectives from many of the country’s ENT thought leaders to gain their opinion of dealing with the infections that came with sinus disease.  Not only was there an “awakening” among many ENT’s that they could order and even occasionally administer IV antibiotics in their office with the necessary supervision, but the results were very positive.

In turn, the newly found company, SinuCare, developed an In-office program providing all the clinical know how required by the ENT.  Mr. Powers developed a Medical Advisory Board not only to provide clinical guidance to the Company but to also assist in educating the at large ENT community on alternative treatments for sinus disease.  As a result, several sinus disease case studies were developed along with a formal multi-site clinical study portraying the use IV antibiotic in the severe sinus patient.

With the intention of once again looking to find and bring benefit to a unique chronic disease, Mr. Powers turned his attention to Lyme Disease around 2005.

Given the general lack of knowledge and expertise among traditional medicine at the time, the company’s focus moved to those considered alternative physicians.

Once again, identifying the “thought leaders” and clearly understanding the disease and treatment modalities became critical. Applying the same principles to the Lyme Market that was given to Sinus disease including the creation of a Medical Advisory Board, developing case studies and producing a multi-site study, resulted in the establishment of a well-respected company which brought great benefit to a multitude of patients throughout the country.

With the success seen by service offerings to the Sinus disease patient Lyme Patient and Podiatry patient, the company founded by Mr. Powers, developed a Franchise opportunity for existing home Infusion Companies to provide service offerings in the three niche disease states. The program was offered nationally, and the company assisted several small home Infusion Providers to bring a new treatment to their community.

Mr. Powers received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Central Florida in 1975.
